LITTLE JARJUM PLAYGROUP

Little Jarjum Playgroup provides a safe and nurturing environment for families with Jarjum 0-5 years old. Playgroup aims to provide a culturally safe space for Jarjum to socialise and learn through play, and to develop their social, emotional, and physical skills. Through activities being delivered the program aims to also enhance our Jarjums imaginations, and incidental learning which happens regularly. Playgroup also benefits Parents, Carers and Grandparents by supporting them with informal social and health support, knowledge sharing and learning opportunities.

CREATIVE ARTS PROGRAM

Our Creative Arts Program is as creative, diverse and interesting as our community. Our program has been developed to ensure our community has opportunities to connect with, participate in, co-create and consume rich and beautiful artistic processes, products and performances. We do this through partnerships with major arts organisations, local community organisations, artists – both local and non-local – and our community – to tell the stories of Inala and to share the ideas, experiences, hopes and dreams of our community.

SPARKLE
MOB

SparkleMob is created by and for Queer, Blak and young mob with a focus on self-expression. Through the creation of a safe and welcoming space, SparkleMob will, supported by queer First Nations artists and Elders, tell their stories through fashion, spoken word, poetry, and dance.

Come join us from 3:30pm-6:00pm every Monday and learn the wonders of self-expression while also making friends!

YOUNG WOMEN’S GROUP

Our Young Women’s Group is set out to assist young people in reaching self-determined goals related to Education, Health, Community and Culture over a 3-month program of work. All content delivered within the weekly sessions will be facilitated by community stakeholders. Once participants have reached their goals a definitional ceremony will take place with the participants as they transition into our Bandarr-gan-gu Women’s Group.

YOUNG MEN’S GROUP

Our Young Men’s Group is set out to assist young people in reaching self-determined goals related to Education, Health, Community and Culture over a 3-month program of work. All content delivered within the weekly sessions will be facilitated by community stakeholders. Once participants have reached their goals a definitional ceremony will take place with the participants as they transition into the Yakka Malar Men’s Group.

BAIL SUPPORT

The SWAP program (South-West Advocacy Program) supports young people that are involved with Youth Justice or at risk of involvement, residing within the community, encompassing the catchment areas of Inala and surrounding suburbs. SWAP offers dedicated support aimed towards navigating the youth justice system, the courts and aiding in the compliance with set bail conditions. Partnering with the team at Inspire Youth and Family Services (IYS) and YAC (Youth Advocacy Centre), this program provides intensive bail support services which focuses on positive relationships, positive social and community engagement and cultural support. This program aims to empower participants to make positive choices and change in their lives.

WOMEN'S PROGRAM

This program is all about our women – creating connections, supporting the development of leadership skills and self-confidence, enhancing personal growth and well-being. Based in traditional notions of Women’s Business activities also encourage friendship, yarning, community and a lot of laughing. Our women get together to make and create art and sewing projects, yarn about important topics, take day trips and attend cultural and arts events.

BALGAH BINAY

Balgah Binay means “to come together, to learn and be uplifted” in Yuggera language and was gifted to Inala Wangarra by Gaja Kerry Charlton. This program, funded by the Brisbane South Primary Health Network aims to empower community organisations to become an interface of primary health care and empower older people, their carers and their families to confidently manage their own health and wellbeing within their community.

NAREE WANDIMA

Naree Wandima (meaning I RISE UP from the Goenpul and Yuggera language group), values participants as a whole person. Partnering with the Institute of Urban Indigenous Health (IUIH) Naree Wandima supports people’s overall social and emotional wellbeing by addressing drug and alcohol reliance with emotional, practical and community support. Our Wellbeing Officers walk alongside participants providing support designed specifically for them and utilising support plans that meet them where they are and help them get to where they want to be.

COMMUNITY JUSTICE GROUP

The South West Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community Justice Group (CJG), funded by the Department of Justice and Attorney General, is coordinated by CJG Coordinator in partnership with Elders and respected persons within our community who develop culturally safe and specific strategies to deal with justice related issues, support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people within the criminal justice system and to decrease our people’s contacts with the Justice system.

“Just Us” Women’s Group

No Justice, it’s Just Us. Cultural Healing. Empowerment. Resilience.

Open to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people identifying as female, aged 18+ in Inala and surrounding areas. The Just Us Women’s Group aims to assist with the over-representation of our community within the criminal justice system. “Just Us” is a grassroots group driven by Sisters with lived experiences, aiming to build connections and start the healing journey through empowerment, cultural activities, yarning, and On Country experiences. Jarjums welcome!

GIFT OF GALLANG

Gift of Gallang was born out of the tragic loss of a young man who in his primary years often spoke of the ideation of suicide and sadly completed in his late teen years. Through the passion, commitment, dedicated and burning desire to see change in our young ones lives a group of local community members and organisations banded together to form the ‘Committee of Hope’ and help develop and grow this program. Focussing on social and emotional wellbeing and grounded in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural practices, Gift of Gallang, works with students in grades four to six with the aim to strengthen resilience, emotional control and pride.

TOO SOLID AWARDS

Our Jarjums are deadly. So deadly that we have a special night dedicated to celebrating them and their school-based achievements. The Too Solid Awards bring together all the students, families, school principals and teachers together with our community. These awards, instigated by local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander parents and workers, are a fun and positive celebration that empowers our kids and their families, cultural identity and promotes successful outcomes at school for all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander kids.

DJ REID MEMORIAL INALA FAMILY TOUCH DAY

The annual DJ Reid Memorial Inala Family Touch Dayl is a significant community event in Inala which was established over a decade ago by local Mob. The DJ Reid Memorial Inala Family Touch Day aims to honour a young Aboriginal man from Inala, this event aims to bring families together, increase positive lifestyle choices, celebrate community and honour those community members who are no longer here with us.

INALA NAIDOC

NAIDOC is the biggest week on the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander calendar and in Inala, we are here for it! Inala NAIDOC celebrations showcases Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, histories, peoples, communities and provides many opportunities for sharing, learning and celebration for people of all ages, cultures, backgrounds and abilities.

Join us for NAIDOC week as we launch our NAIDOC celebrations. Held at the Inala Plaza this event is a public celebration of our existence, survival and ongoing contribution to society. A Welcome to Country, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander dancers, Elders and community along with the wider community join together to acknowledge our community and to invite the wider community to participate and learn more about our cultures.

The NAIDOC Family Fun Day is the best! Held on the Wednesday of NAIDOC week our community gathers to celebrate, catch up and connect. Local artists perform and sell their work, there are cultural activities designed for all ages, information and giveaways, prizes and rides. Truly a fun event for all ages and everyone is welcome.

SOUTHSIDE MABO PROMOTIONAL DAY

Celebrating & acknowledging Eddie Koiki Mabo & the Plaintiffs of the Mabo Case 1 & 2. Eddie Koiki Mabo, an Activist, a Change Agent, a Torres Strait Islander Man, an Elder from Murray Island whose campaign for Indigenous land rights led to a landmark decision of the High Court of Australia overturning ‘terra nullius’ (land belonging to no-one). Our Southside Mabo Promotion Day Celebration is a significant day on our calendar and it is an annual community gathering, celebrating and recognising Torres Strait Islander peoples’ culture, history and contributions through song, dance, performance, informed debate, cultural activities and of course, a Torres Strait Islander feed. Southside Mabo Promotion Day is a feast for your senses and full of joy. Everyone is welcome.
